Portrait WIP: Salem Saberhagen portrait, day 2

Updated: Apr 20, 2019

What magic can be produced with a blue, pink, and white pencil? See for yourself during today's amazing transformation from flat black silhouette to sleek sculpted face by playing the video below! Here is proof of how much highlight and shadow inform human perception of shape and depth. I'm accustomed to creating surface contours with shadow layers after putting in the base color, but this is the exact reverse. I'm pulling out highlights, for a change.

To read about and watch yesterday's speed-drawing clip going from pencil outline to inked silhouette, visit my last blog post. If you're just tuning in, I'm creating a fan art portrait of Salem Saberhagen, a character in both the 90's series, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and the current series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I'll be giving away a print (possibly multiples) in a drawing at my booth at the POP Cats 2019 event in Austin, Texas. Come see me at table #152!
